When you say that you play Omaha poker you may have in mind a few different poker games that you may play depending on where you live. For example, in North America, Omaha rules usually mean the version of hi-lo games, where the best and worst hands split the pot (if the worst hand corresponds to the lower requirements). But in Europe the rules of Omaha refer only to the Omaha Hi, where the player with the best hand wins the pot.
Typically, Omaha Hi-Lo is a fixed limit even though the game can be played in a version within the bank (Pot Limit) on some poker sites. In Omaha Hi the gamblers preferably played with the Bank and it is very popular in the online world.
If you see a rating list with infornation on what kind of poker room showed the biggest winner of the day, usually the top of the list are the players in Omaha poker. A good session in Omaha can make you rich very quickly, but on the other hand, the recession could destroy you.
Basics of the game is very easy to understand if you’re familiar with Texas Hold’em. The principle of betting is exactly the same as the ranking of hands. But there is one major difference – the number of cards are dealt face down. In Texas Hold’em you hand over only two cards, and in Omaha poker you get four cards. This means that you will have more combinations of hands, when you create your best hand. But remember that you must use two cards from your pocket cards.
In Texas Hold’em you may want to use just one card, or even play with the cards on the table. This is impossible in Omaha. Obviously, this makes four aces a bad starting hand, even though the hand might look good. Instead, you want to get a high pair with two other cards of the same suit as the pair or a hand with a few straights and flushes. And if you play Omaha Hi-Lo, a good starting party is the party when you have a chance to catch a high hand and low hand preferably the wheel (straight – ace to five).
